After announcing my candidacy for the State Board of Education, the first thing I did was to begin talking to our area’s educators, school board members and superintendents. Before I finished developing my “platform” I wanted to find out what our local schools want and need from the SBOE. And I wanted to talk with educators from a “parents” point of view. I’m convinced now, more than ever, that local schools haven’t had enough of a voice at the SBOE.
During my phone calls to the superintendents around the district, I was shocked at the number of times I was told that they had never spoken to their SBOE representative. Some superintendents have been in education for 5, 10 even 20 years and they have never spoken to their SBOE representative! How can the SBOE know what their local schools need if they are not listening?
So, after hundreds of phone calls and conversations, the following is what I will be focusing on during my campaign:
- More input from local school boards, parents, superintendents and teachers
- Taking politics OUT of public education
